How to measure your visibility in AI answers
An AI service might mention your business, recommend it, link to its website or send a visitor who later becomes a customer. Each is a different result. Decide which ones you need to measure and report them separately.
Start with questions customers actually ask when choosing your kind of service. Include questions about choosing a provider without naming your brand, as well as factual questions about your business. Keep those groups separate: getting your opening hours right does not mean the service recommends you to new customers.
Record enough to repeat the check
For each run, save the exact question, service and model where available, date, language, region and answer. Record brand mentions and cited URLs separately. Mark a failed request as failed rather than counting it as an answer without a mention. Repeat under comparable conditions because answers can change.
For example, six mentions in 20 valid answers give a 30% mention rate for that sample. Four answers linking to your site give a 20% citation rate. These are illustrative figures, not market benchmarks. They describe your chosen questions, not your share of all AI searches.
Use the answers to identify what needs correcting
Read the answers for errors: an incorrect service area may matter more than an extra mention. Investigate which pages support accurate answers and improve pages that omit essential conditions.
Use analytics and inquiry records to assess business results separately. Referral data can miss visits, and customers may return through another channel. Bing’s AI Performance report covers citations in supported Microsoft and partner services. Google’s generative AI performance reports show impressions in its AI features. An impression is not a visit. Keep each source and metric clearly labeled rather than combining them into one score.
