Google rankings and AI citations: how to compare the results

A high Google ranking does not guarantee a citation in an AI answer. The services may interpret a question differently, use different sources or be checked on different days. To make a useful comparison, start with the same customer question and record the test conditions.

Suppose a product page ranks for “office air purifier”. An AI answer about choosing one for a windowless meeting room may need room size, noise levels and maintenance information. It might cite a technical guide instead. That observation is a reason to examine the information needed, not proof that traditional SEO has stopped working.

Make the comparison reproducible

Record the query, language, location, date and search service. Save the organic search results and the AI answer with its cited URLs. Decide whether you are comparing exact pages or whole domains and keep that choice consistent. Two different pages from one website are not two independent brands.

In a hypothetical example, two of the five domains cited by the AI also appear in the saved Google results. That is 2 out of 5, or 40% of the cited domains. Dividing by ten Google results would measure a different share. Explain what each percentage is calculated from, and do not treat a small sample as a result for all searches.

Use the findings to improve a page

Open the cited pages and find the information used in the answer. Compare it with your specifications, conditions and explanations. If you improve a page, repeat the check, but do not assume that every later change was caused by your edit. A small sample can reveal missing information; it cannot explain source selection across all AI answers.
